Healthy Vegan Alternative to Currywurst

A meat-eating friend from abroad is visiting these days, and he’s an addict. An addict to Berlin’s most well known street food – the Currywurst. It’s a normal German Bratwurst covered in tangy tomato sauce with spicy Indian curry sauce.

The roots of the dish go back to the days after World War II, where a British soldier stationed in Berlin gave a bag of Curry powder he brought from India to the owner on a local Bratwurst stand. The rest, the way some say, is history.

The enchanting smells of the curry sauce made me want to have some too. So I came up with this home made, less fatty and all vegan alternative, where the sausage is replaced with smoked tofu and the sauce is home made.

Ingredients (per serving):
100g smoked tofu
1 spoon vegetable oil

1/4 cup tomato puree
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp vinegar
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon kitchen-king masala (or your favorite curry powder)
dash of sriracha sauce

Mix all the ingredients but the tofu in a small pot and reduce until you reach a creamy texture. Once ready, dice the tofu and fry it in a small pan on a high flame until it gets brown on the edges. Place on a plate and cover with the sauce. Serve with a white bread roll or oven fries.
